MAYAN LANGUAGES | We continue to celebrate Indigenous People's Day, which was 09 of August. 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

Today, we will share about the Mayan languages spoken around Lake Atitlan, where we are located. Two of our studio locations are on the Kaqchiquel side of the lake and one of the children's homes and a former studio branch are on the Tz'utujil side of the lake. 🌊🌊🌊Although the languages are closely related, they are not discernable enough, like Spanish and Italian, in which a native speaker of one language can easily understand the other language.🙇🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️

🩵Kaqchikel language: member of the K'ichean (Quichean) subgroup of the Mayan family of languages, spoken in central Guatemala by some 450,000 people. (Britanica.com 2024)

🩷Tz'utujil language: Is spoken by around 100,000 people, scattered around many municipalities in the south of Sololá and the north of Suchitepéquez. There are at least four different dialects spoken around seven municipalities of Sololá. (Barbierinc.com 2024)

Fun fact: Many of our Indigenous students' moms wear the traditional outfit (traje típico) daily. However, most of our students share that they find it uncomfortable and restrictive. 😬

So they prefer wearing Western clothing daily and wearing traditional outfit for church or special celebrations such as weddings. 🎊 Other students share that the traditional garments are too expensive💰 to use compared to clothing from the market or thrift stores.

A traje típico for a teenager can cost anywhere between $90-$ 200 USD, which is an entire month's income for many single moms in our program. 😱 That's A LOT!

🧐 Important Sidenote: This perspective reflects teenagers from a partially urbanized lake town setting where most of the students do not speak the local Indigenous language, while many of their parents do. 👋🏽This directly reflects the VERY recent history of the Civil War (1960-1996)⚖️⛓️ and the place given to indigenous race and ethnicity that was involved in the conflict between the people vs. the Guatemalan government.

What makes up a typical Mayan indigenous outfit?🤔

1️⃣ HUIPIL: A blouse that is traditionally handwoven🪢 by women 🙋🏾‍♀️ on a backstrap loom. It may include embellishments and almost always includes brocade or embroidery of some type.

2️⃣ CORTE: A long piece of fabric, wrapped and folded into a skirt. These are traditionally made by men 🙋🏾 on a large footloom, which may take up an entire room and take up to 3 days to prep before weaving. 😱 Some cortes may have special embroidery around the entire lower bottom half, which is called a RANDA.

3️⃣ FAJA: A long handwoven 🪢 belt or sash used to hold the corte in place and prevent it from falling. This long belt is woven on a backstrap loom by women 🙋🏾‍♀️ and traditionally uses husks as a base thread.

4️⃣ DELANTAL: An apron that symbolizes the honor of the working woman. 💕💐 Practically, these are used to hold money if a woman is working in the market, for example. Outside of work, these are decorative accessories that finish the outfit. Many are made with rhinestones and even lace.✨️
